Wear It California…“Wear Your Life Jacket to Work” Day Friday, May 15th

wear-it-calif-300 Join us for “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work” Day on Friday, May 15, 2015. This international event brings together boating professionals and boating enthusiasts to heighten awareness of different life jacket types that are available, including inflatable life jackets, and demonstrate their comfort and versatility by wearing them to work.

The annual event, hosted by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) serves as a fun, educational element just prior to National Safe Boating Week, May 16-22, the official launch of the 2015 North American Safe Boating Campaign. Educating the boating public about the safety and comfort of life jackets has been a main focus of the North American Safe Boating Campaign.

“Wear Your Life Jacket to Work” Day will take place on Friday, May 15 wherever you are!

The National Safe Boating Council is asking all participants to take a picture of themselves in their life jacket while at work and post it to the “Ready, Set, Wear It!” Facebook page (http://www.Facebook.com/ReadySetWearIt) or submit directly to the NSBC at ymoslehian@safeboatingcouncil.org. Participants are also encouraged to tweet their picture using #readysetwearit.

Members of the boating public as well as those interested in showing the wearability of life jackets are encouraged to participate. More information about the event and safe boating is available at http://www.Facebook.com/ReadySetWearIt and http://www.ReadySetWearIt.com.

1024-headerWhat Do You Know About Life Jacket Safety?

Many people, even among the boating community, have false perceptions of life jacket safety. Media representatives may consider interviewing boaters at a local park, lake, river or beach to ask the “Man on the street” (or, in this case, “On the water”) simple life jacket safety questions. The given answers can then be compared to the actual safety guidelines and laws.

  1. How often should life jackets be tested for proper fit and buoyancy?

A: Every year.

  1. How many life jackets are boaters required to have on their boat?

A: One for every person.

  1. True or False, life jackets come in only one size and shape?

A: FALSE! Life Jackets come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and materials.

  1. True or False, life jackets can make it harder to swim if you capsize?

A: FALSE! 84 percent of those who drown, while boating, are not wearing a life jacket.

  1. At what age can boaters use inflatable life jackets as an alternative to an inherently buoyant life jacket?

A: 16 years old.
