2015 Calaveras County Labor Day Events

What could be better than an extra day to experience all that Calaveras has to offer? Soak up some high country sun, paddle the lakes, enjoy our caves and wineries as summer draws to a close. For this Labor Day we’ve also compiled a few ideas and key events you won’t want to miss.

 

 

20th Annual Logging Jamboree – Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm $5 Admission
Time to sharpen your axe and join the festivities at the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum’s 20th annual Jamboree. The Jamboree is known for its exciting lumberjack style competitions of axe throwing, hot sawing and team cross cutting, Amateurs are welcome to compete in the morning beginning at 9am, then get out of the way for the pros, who start competing at noon. It’s a full day of history, food and entertainment celebrating the town’s rich timber industry past, plus you’ll get to browse their wonderful collections of vintage logging equipment and scale models of mills and logging camps.

Cedar Center Arts and Crafts Festival – Saturday and Sunday 10:00am-5:00pm
A long-held Arnold tradition for the end of summer – the Festival features 60 booths of fine crafts, art, & gourmet foods to sample – all made by the artists themselves. Continuous shows of live country/swing music by “Homegrown” from Modesto and famous juggler Michael Taylor of ‘Catch it Quick’ will perform both days. There will also be face painting for the kids – and adults! Local beers and a variety of home-made food will be available for sale. Both days offer an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast of ham, eggs and pancakes from 7:30am – 11:00am for just $6. A Farmer’s Market will be on site as well, offering a variety of fresh local produce & baked goodies. Admission and parking are free.
Bear Valley Boxcar Derby and Country Fair – Saturday All Day
It’s a fun filled day of derby car races (non-motorized cars powered only by gravity and the navigation skills of the driver). The Derby is open to aspiring racers of all ages. Racing starts at 10:00am. Cars are provided – just register online or in person at the event and come ready to race!
In addition to the races, a full day of scheduled activities at The Country Faire includes exciting attractions like a bungee trampoline, an elevated ropes course, climbing wall, an animal petting zoo, as well as festive foods and beverages. The day is capped off with a BBQ dinner and live music.

Bear Valley Triathlon – Sunday, Start time 10:00am
It’s the 23rd Annual Bear Valley Triathlon, with a challenging High Sierra course that features a 600-yard swim (warm water, close to 70 degrees, wet suits are allowed, but not necessary); a 10.5-mile bike (rolling, climbing loop course); and a 3.4-mile run (rolling road). The triathlon will conclude with the awards ceremony, raffle, and a great barbecue.

2015 Calaveras County Labor Day Concerts

Brice Station Vineyards –Saturday 7:00pm, featuring the Hot Dark, tickets $10

Copper Town Square – Saturday 7:00pm, featuring Johnny Cash tribute act James Garner, free admission.

The Calaveras Community Band will play two venues over the weekend:
Saturday 6:00pm at Ironhorse Campground in the New Melones Glory Hole Recreation Area
Monday 6:30pm at Murphys Park – both concerts are free and you’re encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the music
